"I've been painting since I can remember...." "Art is my passion...." "Being creative is something I have to do...." Blah, Blah, Blah....How many times have we (as artists) started out our bio's like that? I'm guilty myself! And although true on every account, it gets to be redundent, doesn't it! Every artist has to be creative (don't we), is passsionate about art (who isn't), has been doing some form of artwork all their lives (dugh?)...otherwise we wouldn't be artists, right! LOL!

So, I won't bore you with all that "stuff", but what I will tell you is this, my love affair with color started when I got my first box of Crayolas'! I mean who didn't love getting a new box of 48, with the sharpener on the back to boot! It was pimped out! Okay, am I crazy? Am I the only one who felt that way? And if you were lucky enough, you got the BIG BOX of 96! For me, that was usually on Christmas. I could spend hours coloring. Opening the box and looking at all the colors, their sharpened tips all exposed and ready to change the way a blank page looked forever! Yay, I know, I sound a little nuts, but its true, color changes everything. I remember telling my mother, "When I grow up, I wanna be a professional colorer!" She would smile politely at me, step over me, and I would go back to feverishly coloring. Well, thirty years later I'm still coloring,  now it's just with acrylic paints and my canvas is furniture. I am lucky enough to be a professional colorer and I love my job!

I went the route of traditional school (had to make the parents happy), got my BS degree is Psychology & Special Education from LeMoyne College, but decided to start a decorating/painting/wallpapering business (2 Women and a Paintbrush http://2womenandapaintbrush.blogspot.com) eight years ago with my long time partner instead (just to make me happy)!

After 7 years of painting walls we decided to launch our second business last year,The Decorative Paintbrush. We loved finding vintage, old, discarded furniture (even by the side of the road, to the dismay of our 5 children) and giving it new life! We sifted through thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, estate sales, friends basements, even did weekly trash night runs to get our fix (It's amazing what people throw away)! So, now we fuse pieces together, embellish, paint, and do all sorts of things to turn junk into funk and take once discarded pieces of furniture and turn them into functional pieces of art! Our pieces are not traditional, or shabby chic, although I can create those styles, but for the most part our pieces are bright, funky and above all else colorful! Full of patterns, fauxs and fun color combinations that excite the eye.

We also started building some of our own pieces from left over scrap wood we had (storeage boxes, benches etc, hair tie holders, jewelry holders...) and occasionally purchase items from our favorite unfinished wood store in North Syracuse! Plus, we just started to offer a line of art objects for the home (jewelry boxes, drawer boxes, plaques, coat racks etc...) So, we have lot to keep us busy!

Please, check out our blog http://decorativepaintrbush.blogspot.com where we have turtorials on refinishing and repurposing furniture. If you use Face Book please become a fan of our page there, The Decorative Paintbrush (or 2 Women and a Paintbrush) and you can also purchase items on our Etsy store www.etsy.com/shop/thedpb. If you have a piece of furniture you would like to have an estimate done on please contact me via email thedpb@gmail.com
