George a. Olsen, Jr. began wood turning in 2004 with hours of study and practice. His work was recognized as art being selected in 2008 by jurors at the Arkell Museum in Canajoharie, Cooperstown Art National and Regional Shows, and the Wilber Mansion Show in Oneonta.
Most of the wood used is purchased from Catskill area mills or was harvested from locally grown stock found within 100 miles of the studio. The majority of the trees grew within the 6 county designated Catskill region of Delaware, Otsego, Ulster, Sullivan, Schoharie and Green counties. Some work is crafted from reclaimed, historical or legacy woods typically as commissioned pieces carrying the memory of the previous owner or grower.
George excels in crafting useful objects with a unique perspective. His work has
been appreciated locally, regionally, nationally and internationally for gifts that are beautiful to behold and wonderful to use. George’s products can be viewed on line at
. His woodturnings can be found at the Artisan’s Gallery in Middleburgh, NY and at other selected shops. George also exhibits at regional juried craft shows where he is usually joined by his wife, Theresa, who is the sweeper of sawdust, critic, manager of the web, designer of tags and paper goods, keeper of the books, photographer and No. 1 fan!
