Artist Biography

Gina Whalen lives in Newburgh, New York.  I was born  and lived in Central New York until the age of 25 years old.  When I was 18, my career was strongly influenced by my parents.  In 1985 I attended Syracuse University where I studied Therapeutic Recreation with a concentration in Psychology.  I earned my Bachelor of Science degree and went on to a very rewarding career working with children who have developmental disabilities.  Although, I enjoyed my earlier career very much, I still continued to study the arts in my free time.  I studied Studio Art 1 &2, Metal Art, Jewelry Making, Drawing, and Painting at the Munson Williams Pratt Institute in Utica, NY.

In 1992, I gave up my career to stay at home and raise my family. I returned to my passion for the arts in 2014 when I began painting again.  Having always been inspired by Jackson Pollock and Paul Clee, I began creating abstract compositions.  I worked with various mediums such as, acrylic, oil, fluid acrylic, and my personal favorite the pouring technique.  Having minimal professional art training, I was afforded the freedom to create from the heart.

I now consider myself a “late-bloomer”.  I have decided to go back to school to study Visual Communication and Graphic Design.  I feel that visual media has given me powerful tools to create more dynamic art.  I have embraced the change and am very excited to explore this new avenue while creating still from the heart.
